What is the Children and Young People's Partnership?

Do you know what the Children & Young People’s Partnership is? Do you want to know?

Probably not, but if you want to see things get better for young people in Cornwall, then you might want to keep reading…

The Children & Young People’s Partnership is a group of senior managers from different agencies that meet monthly to discuss how to improve things for children and young people in Cornwall. The Executive, which has other organisations advising it, is made up by:

  •   -    Services for Children, Young People & Families (Cornwall County Council)
  •  -    District Councils (North Cornwall, Caradon, Carrick, Restormel, Kerrier, Penwith)

 -    Devon & Cornwall Police

 -    Devon & Cornwall Probation

 -    Youth Offending Team

 -    Strategic Health Authority

 -    Cornwall & Isles of Scilly Primary Care Trust (NHS)

 -    Learning & Skills Council

 -    Connexions

 -    Voluntary & Community Sector

Although the Partnership has been going for several years in Cornwall, the Government thinks that we as a country could do much more, so it published something called Every Child Matters.

Have you heard of Every Child Matters?

If not click here for more info. The Government wants all organisations for children & young people to work closer together, to make sure everyone can get the services they need. They think we can do this by:

 -  People from different agencies (like youth workers, social workers or health visitors) working in the same place, like sharing offices or buildings.

 -  Senior managers in organisations writing plans together, to make sure they are not doing the same things and to make sure there are no gaps in the services they provide.

 -  Putting all their money together to help buy services from other organisations, like voluntary organisations or private companies.

They are already writing plans together, and they have come up with the Children & Young People’s Plan. This is a plan for improving services, and is based the five things Every Child Matters says children & young people should be able to do:

 -   Be Healthy (physically and emotionally)

 -   Stay Safe (from getting hurt or being hurt by others)

 -   Enjoy & Achieve (inside and outside school)

 -   Make a Positive Contribution (by getting involved in your community and by not getting into trouble)

 -   Achieve Economic Wellbeing (by having all the opportunities you need)

What’s all this got to do with me we hear you say?

Well, if the CYPP does its job over the next few years, you should see more things to do and places to go in your area. You should be able to do the courses you want to do, even if your nearest college or school doesn’t offer them. You should have someone to talk to if you need advice or have a problem, and you should know how to get involved in telling us what young people really need.

Sounds like a good plan right?

Well, it’s a huge task to try and achieve, and the CYPP needs all the help they can get. If you think you can help, want to get involved or just want to know a bit more, visit the CYPP website or email the Partnership Support Team at cypp@cornwall.gov.uk.
