PE and its Psychological Effect on Students

Most students do enjoy PE but there are a few who find it awkward and embarrassing. Is it fair that these students are forced to do something that they wouldn’t even get half a GCSE in? Should PE be made voluntary rather than compulsory? I think yes and so do more than a few others.

I am speaking from personal experience when I say that PE can destroy someone’s confidence and self-esteem. I think that children under the age of 12 should do PE as it can build team-working skills and provide good exercise, however as you get older you start to become more conscious of the way you look. If people start to tease you about this or just the fact that you might not be very good at sports, then it could affect other subjects. You might just become a little bit shy when it comes to answering questions when before you were fine, or (if the bullying continues or gets worse) you could start to become overly-worried about the smallest things like doing group activities or even walking into assembly in front of everyone.

I think the worst part of PE is having to get changed in front of all your classmates, as this is the easiest time for them to say anything. While you are getting changed there are normally no teachers nearby and they can tell all their friends to tease you about anything they think is wrong.

The problem is that once they have started teasing you it can be very difficult to get them to stop because if you tell a teacher then it’s likely that they will get their friends to gang up on you and besides the damage is already done. Also because you have to do PE in front of everyone, then more people are likely to notice you than just in a small classroom.

I feel that it would be best if PE was made a voluntary subject for those who enjoy it or don’t mind doing it as it can be very damaging for someone’s psychological health.
