Healthy Eating - Is Your Canteen Filled With Chips and Junk Food? An eefo.net user's Story

Mine is!

Chips, pizza, doughnuts and fizzy drink rule the canteen with a few cheese and floppy lettuce sandwiches pushed to the side still there from yesterday. I’m a 12 stone young man of 16 from Cornwall. At my canteen crowds of children ranging from the age of 11- 16 flock to the counter money in hand. Health hazards being sold like hot cakes to over weight unhealthy children with sugar pumping through their veins. All a result of a bad menu, with not enough healthy food available and not enough promotion for them.

A high percentage of this country is over weight and the numbers are going up and up. Being in a rural area like mine we do not have a noticeably high level of obesity. However TV programs in urban areas show large percentages of people over weight.

The only solution to this is to:

Campaign about it to someone important in your school and let them know that you are doing
Keep on about it
Boycotting the canteen
Getting as many people to join your boycott as you can

From now on I will be eating healthy food. If the school cannot provide it I will get it from elsewhere, either from home or a shop. Another key aspect of a healthy life is to do exercise so I will be walking the 20-minute walk to school from now on.
