It’s up to you whether you smoke or not, but before you start, here are the facts.
Cash
Smoking isn’t cheap. Smoking 10 a day will cost you over £700 a year.
Health
Of all your mates who smoke, half of them will die early because of their smoking.
Diseases and conditions caused by smoking include:
| • | lung cancer |
| • | heart disease |
| • | bronchitis |
| • | stroke |
| • | gangrene |
| • | pneumonia |
| • | blood clots |
| • | leukaemia |
Also:
| • | damages teeth |
| • | wounds take longer to heal |
| • | period problems in women |
| • | reduced sperm count in men |
| • | impotence in men |
| • | stress |
| • | wrinkles appear at a younger age |
| • | colds and flu last longer |
Breathtaking
It’s not just nicotine and tar you are inhaling. There are some 4,000 chemicals in a cigarette including: arsenic, acetone (nail polish remover), hydrogen cyanide (used to execute people in the USA), DDT (an insecticide banned in Britain), lead.
Green
To produce tobacco suitable for smoking, forests are destroyed. Trees are burned to cure the tobacco - 26 trees per year per smoker. This loss of trees leads to the formation of desert areas.
Tobacco plants need large amounts of fertiliser and pesticides - these can poison local water supplies.

Smokers age more quickly - you get wrinkled skin at a much younger age. Smoking damages your teeth making it more likely you’ll need false ones.
You’ve got the latest gear, you’ve spent ages doing your hair. Unfortunately, you stink of fags - your hair, clothes, and breath. No matter how many mints you have or smelly stuff you use - you still stink. You won’t smell it, but other people will.
Passive
Smoking doesn’t just harm the smoker. Other people breathing in your cigarette smoke (passive smoking) can be harmed
