I have smoked since the age of ten... I started smoking for a dare, then before I knew it I was smoking five to ten cigarettes a day. A lot of it was peer pressure; because your friends smoked, you smoked. I wish I hadn’t.
It is my eighteenth birthday next month; I have been smoking for nearly eight years. I want to be free from cigarettes; I want to do it for myself. I have so many personal reasons to quit smoking. I have tried many times before, by myself though. I didn’t smoke for three days on my last attempt. I am told those who do try to manage to quit by themselves are not very successful. Only 1% are able to quit.
I have read that nicotine is just as addictive as cocaine and heroin. Each cigarette contains 4,000 chemicals, all of which are extremely harmful to us.
I understand that I need help. At college I picked up a card advertising the Stop Smoking Service. I phoned the service, the man was o.k. and cool about it. He was able to point me in the right direction.
I had the choice of going to my doctors or to the local chemist where a member of staff has been specially trained by the Stop Smoking Service.
I decided to go to the chemist. The advice and support I received was brilliant, the lady organized a prescription for me. I dropped into the chemist every week for the patches and support. The lady even phoned me on my mobile to give me extra support. She really cared! And that’s what did it!
I feel that without the help of the Stop Smoking Service, I would still be a smoker. Now I have a smoke free future, thanks to myself and the support from the service.
