Fitness

Being physically active can keep you physically fit - with a healthy heart and bones. It also helps you to control your weight and is now linked to helping prevent certain cancers - e.g. cancer of the colon.

To keep our heart healthy we should be trying to be’ moderately’ active for half an hour to an hour five days a week. This means that after you’ve been active you should feel warm and slightly out of breath.

Taking part in physical activity can also help your mental well-being. You can feel good about achieving something or learning new skills. Just the buzz of being active can make you feel better. It’s a good remedy for stress and anxiety. Toned muscles and a good circulation can make you look good.

ENJOY BEING ACTIVE - HAVE FUN AND KEEP HAPPY.

What to choose?

" Anything that you enjoy doing and can afford to do on a regular basis. Try a variety of activities, as this will help you maintain physical fitness, strength, and flexibility.
" Keeping fit by using the gym or jogging is fine but it can be socially isolated activity. Is there a team sport like basketball, football, netball, or hockey that you can get involved with or is this difficult to get involved now you’ve left school? There are other activities which can be done in groups as well as alone such as swimming, walking, riding keep fit classes, yoga and martial arts such as Ti-Chi.
" Remember in Cornwall we are lucky and have the sea all around us, swimming, snorkelling, surfing are there to take part in, free of charge.

TAKE CARE HOWEVER...

Excessive overtraining can do us more harm than good. Those who take a moderate amount of exercise are not only healthier but also fitter than those who exercise to excess. Over training can lead to higher resting heart rate and blood pressure problems. It can also create mood and sleep disturbances and chemical stress indicators such as lower white blood cell count. If anabolic steroids are used there can be all sort of side effects including the risk of osteoporosis.

The message is...

· make the most of your physical fitness, current health and wellbeing, growth and development
· develop active lifestyles that can be maintained through adult life to reduce the risk of chronic diseases in adult hood.
