Mind Matters (eefo.net user)

Life can be really tough much of the time...

Surviving disappointments, problems, relationships, pressure and the like really gets to me. Sometimes hassles seem so heavy that the good things seem to pass me by. It’s easy for my head to be filled with negative stuff.

A mate told me to look at things a bit differently. It’s not just about looking on the bright side. Sometimes that’s just too difficult. He said there are some simple things to do every day that can make a difference to how I feel:

Focus on even the smallest achievement everyday… even when it feels like the tides against me… sometimes getting out of bed before lunch is an effort.
Make the effort to mix with different people… friends, family, part-time job, clubs and groups…
Do things that others appreciate… I think who I want to please; what I can do; I do it and then take in the feedback
Check out new ways to cope… I look at other people and see how they use different ways of coping. I can ask youth workers, teachers for help on how I can get those skills.

Sometimes it’s not about being happy. Sometimes it’s just about surviving.

MIND OVER MATTER

Keeping my mind straight gets easier when I follow some ’tips’.

Even when it’s tough, I do 15 minutes of pleasure twice a day. If that’s too difficult, I start doing things that used to give me pleasure before I felt so low
Gradually take more physical exercise; walking, swimming, boarding, riding all help!
Drink less alcohol; it sometimes feels like it helps, but it adds to my depression
Talk to a friend about how I feel… Make phone call or text a message to get a reply.
Take time to chill and relax; soaking in the bath is good, listing to upbeat music
