Have you seen the mobile phone advert ’ Who would you like your one to one with’ ?
One person chooses Nelson Mandela, another young person chooses his great grandfather, a North American Indian who he greatly respects.
Have you ever thought that you could do with someone to talk things through with, one to one?
Perhaps you would benefit from having a mentor.
A mentor can be a friend, a relative, a teacher, someone that you trust, like and respect.
Cornwall Youth Service runs a voluntary mentoring scheme for young people aged 14-25, which will match you with an adult who will be there just for you, to help, encourage and introduce you to new experiences.
A Mentor is person who is there to help you to find the answers that work for you. Mentors have often faced challenges themselves and understand what it feels like when things aren’t going well.
Have a go at answering the following questions:
" Ever been a time when you wanted to talk to someone in confidence about the things that are important to you, and know that they wouldn’t take sides?
" Ever wanted someone who would listen to your hopes and dreams, respect your ideas and try to find practical ways to help?
" Ever wanted to learn how to do things better, but kept quiet in case you were laughed at?
" Ever wanted someone who believed in you and whose opinion you valued?
" Ever wanted to sort out a new direction in your life and not known where to start?
If you have answered ’yes’ to any of these questions, then having a mentor could be the first step to realising your hopes and dreams.
What can you expect from a mentor?
Whether you choose someone that you already know and trust, or whether you decide to have a mentor from a mentoring service, you can expect your mentor to have the following skills:
" Coaching Skills: A mentor can help you to learn new skills
" Listening skills: Your mentor will be someone who will listen carefully to what you have to say, will not tell anyone else and will help you to understand what you want out of life.
" A role model: The sort of person you’d like to be. Someone who has ’been there’ and ’done it’ and not just talked about it.
" A sign poster: Someone who will help you to find the direction that seems right for you, and help you to find the information you need.
A mentor is somebody who can help you realise your dreams
