If you are thinking about getting a tattoo, on holiday or at any other time, there are some factors that need consideration.
Firstly, why are you getting a tattoo; it need not necessarily be an in-depth soul searing reason, but it does need to be more thought out than ’because your mates have one’ or some 5 minute celebrity has got one.
Tattoos are forever, there is no totally successful method of removal, and all removal techniques will cost many times more and be extremely more uncomfortable than applying a tattoo in the first place.
Dashing into the first shop you can find is not the way to proceed, tattoos can be a life changing decision, and need more research than buying a bag of chips. There are many reputable and talented tattoo artists, but there are equally as many who neither possess any artistic ability nor care about you or your tattoo; because someone has a tattoo studio does not automatically ensure that they are proficient, there is no governing body in the business that checks artistic or technical ability.
Think long and hard about your choice of subject matter, is it going to stand the test of time or will it make you feel foolish in years to come; will anyone be impressed with ’NEWQUAY 2007’ in ten years time!
The cost of anything is always an issue, and whilst there is a limit as to the amount of money you wish to spend, good tattoos aren’t cheap, and cheap tattoos aren’t good, if a tattooist is coming in at half the price of everyone else, there will be a reason (not good) for that.
A good indicator of the quality of the shop you are in will come from the atmosphere and attitude of the studio itself; a smoke filled shop with people hanging out and drinking is probably not your best choice, nor is one where the tattooist or staff doesn’t give you the time of day. Having said that, be aware that everyone’s attitude will be shaped by your own, so if you go in as the world’s foremost non-tattooed expert on tattoos you will get short shrift. Listen to what the experts are telling you and take note - not the hump!
Tattoos done properly can enhance your existence and the opposite also applies, take your time and make the right choice.
