It is common sense that the safest way to drink alcohol is drink sensibly (See guidelines on responsible drinking section).
If you decide to drink alcohol, you should work out the least harmful ways of drinking it and staying in control of the situation.
Most harm comes from:
| • | Mixing a drug with alcohol - the results can be unexpected or fatal; |
| • | Not taking a break between drinking sessions; |
| • | Bingeing on alcohol at every opportunity; |
| • | Drinking alcohol when you are alone; |
| • | Drinking alcohol with strangers in unfamiliar situations; |
| • | Driving or getting into a car with someone who has been drinking alcohol; |
| • | Drinking alcohol to ease the ’comedown’ off another drug that has been taken; |
| • | Getting into sexual situations you have not planned to as a result of drinking alcohol; |
| • | Not knowing what you are drinking; |
| • | Getting involved in criminal activity after drinking alcohol; |
| • | Having no plans about how you will get home; |
| • | Having no money to get home or make a phone call; |
| • | Assuming you will react in the same way each time you drink alcohol; |
| • | Drinking the same amount of alcohol as older friends or family. Your age, size and experience will change the effect; |
| • | Agreeing to do things you feel uncomfortable with; |
| • | Leaving your drink unguarded - it could get spiked; |
| • | Staying in a situation that is unsafe or uncomfortable; |
| • | Finding it difficult to say what you want and don’t want; |
| • | Assuming that drinking alcohol will affect you the same way as your mate; |
| • | Drinking before or during physical activity such as swimming or sports; |
| • | Operating machinery or electrical equipment after drinking alcohol; |
| • | Drinking alcohol whilst taking prescribed medication. |
