Emergency Situations

If someone needs to be sick, you should:

Encourage them to stay sitting up.
Make sure they are in the recovery position and not lying on their backs, if they want to lie down.
Ring for medical assistance if they start to choke.

If people are drowsy, but awake:

Put the person in the recovery position.
Try and stop them becoming unconscious, speaking to them can help.
Do not put them to bed, because they may become unconscious in their sleep.
If they want a drink, only give them small sips of luke warm water.
Get medical help.

If people faint or lose consciousness:

Put them in the recovery position
Loosen any tight clothes that may restrict their breathing
Put a blanket or coat over them to keep them warm, although be careful not to make them too hot
Check their breathing
Call an ambulance

How do I tell if someone has alcohol poisoning?

If they are breathing less than 12 times per minute or if they stop breathing for 10 seconds or longer.
If you cannot wake them up and they appear to be sleeping
If their skin is cold, clammy, pale and has a bluish tone

Alcohol poisoning is very dangerous and can lead to death if left untreated.

If you suspect someone has alcohol poisoning, you should call for an ambulance without delay.

Remain with the person until medical assistance arrives.
