Chatrooms
Few would deny that chat rooms are a great way to contact people, whether they are friends who move away or they are new friends who share similar interests. The problem is there are hidden dangers lurking in some of these rooms. Not everyone who uses chat rooms is safe to know. There have been many cases of people being tricked into giving personal information to people that are dangerous. Worse still is that it is easy to get tricked into meeting up with some very dodgy individuals.
So what is eefo.net saying - Dont use chat rooms?
What eefo is saying in this article is that chat rooms can be a lot safer if you keep some things in mind. The Good Web Site Guide 2002 has the following tips for keeping safe on line and for chatting wisely:
1. Be wary, just like you would be if you were visiting any new place.
2. People often pretend to be someone they’re not when they’re chatting; unless you know the person, assume that’s the case with anyone you chat with.
3. Don’t meet up with anyone you’ve met online - keep your online life separate. Chances are they’d be a let down anyway, even if they were genuine.
4. If you like the look of a chat room or site, but you’re not sure about it, get a recommendation first.
5. If you want to meet up with friends online, arrange a time and a place beforehand. 6. If you don’t like someone, just block them.
6. Check out the excellent www.chatdanger.com/ for more info on how to chat safely.
EEFO would also add another tip. Only give your email address to people you are 100% sure you know. Also make sure that when giving your email address, only the person it is intended for is able to read it.
