What is a panic attack?
Panic Attacks sound like the behaviour of one whom may start crying or reacting in an outward manner, which may attract attention and lead to quick recognition of the problem.
In fact, a Panic attack can be quite hard to diagnose. It took me 10 years to discover what was happening to me, no thanks to the Doctor either, who thought I had the Flu, then Glangela fever! It cost me 10 years of wondering if I was slowly going mad, led to lower self esteem, insecurity and problems sleeping.
My symptoms were: Faintness, light headed, not feeling like I was really there (Unreality), and very frightened.
Indeed there seems to be no certain thing that the body is reacting against Physically, however, I believe that the problem is related to one’s personal fears and insecurities, which are exposed and heightened during a period of vulnerability or illness. This then leads to fight or flight, a Psychological (Brain) response to a dangerous situation which can actually make the attack worse because the attack can feel like it has come out of no where, disarming one from resistance. After the attack, feelings of confusion and worry may keep you from visiting a doctor, or even talking about it with friends and family. Thee likelihood of more attacks is increased from then on because its anxiety that drives panic attacks.
If you think you have or have suffered from a Panic attack and are concerned about it coming back, I would strongly recommend you find out more (See resources below). The worse thing you can do is keep it to yourself and never know otherwise.
I read ’Overcoming Panic, Anxiety and Phobias’. This is a very helpful book, in that it comforts and sheds much light on the problems related to anxiety and features a diagnosis procedure, followed by self-help techniques, which are very useful!
