Being Thrown Out! - An eefo.net user's Story

My sister Tanya and I have never really got on very well. There is a 3-year gap between us, I am the oldest and she is the middle of 3 of us. This all happened while I was studying for my GCSE’s.

What didn’t help was that she is my mum’s favourite. When we argued mum always said it was my fault, I used to feel like everything was my fault. Tanya was always ruining to mum telling stories and fibs to get me into trouble.

But the worst happened one night, all over two shelves in a cupboard. Tanya had both shelves and I wanted to put my things on one of them. I put my things on one of the shelves and she took them off and put hers back on. I then took hers off again and we got into a big argument about it. Mum could hear us and shouted at us to be quiet, Tanya then threw all my stuff off the shelf and onto the floor, so I threw all her stuff on the floor. She went running to my mum saying I was throwing her stuff all over the room. Mum shouted at me to go and see her. When I did she shouted at me for throwing all of Tanya’s things on the floor.

The worst is just about to come.

My stepdad also shouted at me he told me that I was useless and that I had to quit school, get a job and get out of their f***ing hair. I was so upset, he was still shouting at me, but I can’t remember what else he was shouting because all I could think of was where was I going to go. Mum sat with him while he shouted at me and she never even told him he was being out of order she just sat there and said noting

I ran into mine and Tanya’s bedroom, grabbed my school uniform stuffed it into my school bag with my books, grabbed my purse and coat and ran out into the rain. It was 9.30pm when this happened.

I ran straight to the nearest phone box and ran my Nan - I had to reverse the charges because I had no money. My Nan was great, she always is. She told me to get to the nearest taxi rank and get a taxi to her - she lives 20 miles from my mum’s house.

I was crying the whole way over in the taxi, the taxi driver was great, and it helped to speak to someone who wasn’t in the family.

When I got to my Nan’s she gave me a big hug and kiss. Mum hadn’t even phoned her to see if I was safe. She says that she didn’t phone because she knew where I would have gone.

My Nan has never really liked my stepdad and this just made her even more angry with him. I went home after a week and things seemed better, that was until 2 months later after my GCSE’s I had another fight with Tanya my stepdad threw me out again. Again my Nan took me in, but this time I stayed with her and didn’t go home. I still saw everyone after a while, I was especially upset as I had a little sister who was 4 at the time and I couldn’t face not seeing her - although my stepdad was horrible and said I couldn’t, my mum stuck up for me this time and said that I could see her.

Now it is 3 years on and Tanya and I get on a lot better then before. I have never forgiven my stepdad for what he did - he now says that he is very sorry and that he wished he never did it - the thing is he did do it and I will not ever forget it.

My Nan was great though and I owe her a lot. She thinks that I wouldn’t be the person I am today if I hadn’t been through what I have.

If I didn’t have my Nan I don’t know what I would have done that night! Thanks Nan!
