Divorce - An eefo.net user's Story

I was 8 when my parents split up, although I did not understand why at the time. I thought that they were my mum and dad and that they would be married forever just like in all the storybooks.

No that I am 17 I finally realised that they are both individual people and that they just didn’t love each other anymore. Why should they both stay together, unhappy for the sake of us kids.

Although I thought my dad was really selfish leaving my mum and me on our own, I know now that had they stayed together it wouldn’t have been fair. Anyway it’s quite good in a way; they both spoil you rotten cause they feel guilty about not being able to live together. You get loads of pressies.

My mum is really happy now with her new husband and my dad is also getting remarried so in the end everyone is better off.

In a way though I am lucky because my parents didn’t go through a horrible divorce, they still speak to each other. When some parents split up it can get very nasty with both parents fighting for custody over the children. Some parents can not even be in the same room, building even, as each other without fighting.

But I suppose what I am trying to say is don’t be mad with your parents for splitting up, they have to think about themselves as well as us kids.
